1 Listening, Reading, and Viewing

  • 1.1 Processes and strategies

    • 1.1.1 Acquire and begin to use sources of information, processes, and strategies to identify, form, and express ideas.

      • 1.1.1.a selects and reads texts for enjoyment and personal fulfilment;

      • 1.1.1.b has an awareness of the connections between oral, written, and visual language;

      • 1.1.1.c uses sources of information (meaning, structure, visual and grapho-phonic information) and prior knowledge to make sense of a range of texts;

      • 1.1.1.d associates sounds with letter clusters as well as with individual letters;

      • 1.1.1.e uses processing and some comprehension strategies with some confidence;

      • 1.1.1.f is developing the ability to think critically about texts;

      • 1.1.1.g begins to monitor, self-evaluate, and describe progress.

  • 1.2 Purposes and audiences

    • 1.2.1 Recognise that texts are shaped for different purposes and audiences.

      • 1.2.1.a identifies the purposes of simple texts;

      • 1.2.1.b evaluates the usefulness of simple texts.

  • 1.3 Ideas

    • 1.3.1 Recognise and identify ideas within and across texts.

      • 1.3.1.a understands that personal experience can influence the meaning gained from texts;

      • 1.3.1.b makes meaning of texts by identifying ideas in some texts.

  • 1.4 Language features

    • 1.4.1 Recognise and begin to understand how language features are used for effect within and across texts.

      • 1.4.1.a begins to recognise that oral, written, and visual language features can be used for effect;

      • 1.4.1.b recognises a large bank of high-frequency and some topic-specific words;

      • 1.4.1.c shows some knowledge of text conventions, such as: capital letters, full stops, and word order; volume and clarity; and simple symbols.

  • 1.5 Structure

    • 1.5.1 Recognise and begin to understand text structures.

      • 1.5.1.a understands that the order and organisation of words, sentences, and images contribute to text meaning;

      • 1.5.1.b recognises some text forms and some differences between them.
